Obituary of Robert Lee Smartt
Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert Lee Smartt, 70, passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2021 in his home state of Tennessee following a commendable battle with complications from COVID-19. Up until his peaceful departure from this world, he demonstrated the same unwavering resilience commonly seen by his loved ones and friends during a long, storied life.
A true servant at heart, Robert’s selfless desire to serve his country and community spanned several decades. His list of accomplishments is long and noble, including: military service (U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, Tennessee Air National Guard), public service (Memphis Police Department, West Memphis Police Department, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office), education (medical: nursing, emergency, laboratory), protective service, and sales management. Additionally, ever a man who refused to be boastful, Robert received many awards and accolades over the years, notably a plaque from the Optimist Club for getting injured in the line of duty.
Those who knew him well can attest to how Robert enjoyed cold drinks from Sonic Drive-In, listened to Elvis Presley, danced the “Funky Chicken,” and brought lighthearted fun to any situation.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Shelah Koonce Smartt; his sister, Patt (Ernie); his children, Blair (Josh), Greg, Maegan, and Adam; his 7 grandchildren, some who will fondly remember him as “Newbie”; niece Heather; his network of extended family; and his many dear friends, including those who knew him through service in military, police, church, and protection roles. Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Lucille; his brother, Norman; and his son, Brian.
Visitation with Robert’s family will be held at Northside Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, TN on Monday, June 14, 2021 from 4:00 till 6:00 PM. A memorial service will take place the following day at 11:00 AM, also at Northside Baptist Church. Robert’s family would like to ask those who have served or who are serving in the military or law enforcement to wear their uniforms.
