Mary Hoover Johnson passed from this life surrounded by her loving family after a four year valiant battle with cancer on February 23, 2023 at her daughter’s home.
Mary was born on January 11, 1930 to the parents of the late Margaret Buchanan Hoover and French Lowe Hoover. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Donald Johnson; brothers French Lowe Hoover Jr. and Thomas Franklin Hoover; and sisters Margaret Hoover Todd and Caroline Hoover Hawk. She is survived by her daughter Mary Lavender Money (Gene) of Winchester ; son Donald L. Johnson of Murfreesboro; grandson John Lavender (Charly) of Winchester; granddaughter Laura Hill (Justin) of Winchester; great-grandchildren Taylor Nunley, William Lavender, Makenzie Hill, and Austin Hill all of Winchester; sister Helen Hoover Nipper of Murfreesboro: several beloved nieces and nephews, and her devoted canine buddy, Winston.
Mary was born and raised in the Buchanan community that was named for her late great grandfather, Governor John Price Buchanan. She was a retired bookkeeper for several school systems and a former Deputy Clerk in the Rutherford County Circuit Court Clerk’s office. Mary and her husband Don enjoyed attending MTSU ballgames for years, and she was a loyal supporter of both her husband during his coaching career and her children in all their sporting events. Mary was a faithful member of the Rockvale Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she was very active in the women’s CPW and church and community events. She will be remembered for her creative writing, love of literature, beautiful smile, and outgoing personality.
Murfreesboro Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, February 28th from 12:30 – 2:00 followed by the funeral service at Murfreesboro Funeral Home. The Reverend Jonathan Watson and the Reverend Justin Hill will serve as officiants. Grandson John Lavender and nephews Thomas Todd, Terry Hoover, Thomas Hoover, David Hawk and John Hawk will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Mary’s honor may be made to the Rockvale Cumberland Presbyterian Church at P. O. Box 67 Rockvale , TN 37153 and St. Jude Children’s Hospital at www.stjude.org.
