Martha Belle Powell Haun passed away on November 6, 2012 at Namaste Alzheimer Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was 84 years old. Martha was born on February 5, 1928 in Christiana, Tenn., the eldest of five children. Martha played the violin, loved to travel and was known to play a mean game of basketball in her younger days. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Middle Tennessee State University and her Masters Degree in Psychology, Education and Guidance at Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, Georgia. On December 29, 1951, she was married to Sam T. Haun in her family home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. That union lasted 61 years and was blessed with the birth of two sons. Martha began her career in education at Effington County High School in Springfield, Georgia, in 1959. She served as Guidance Counselor at Georgia Southern College's Pitman Lab School for eight years before moving with her family to Trinidad in 1970. She worked as a Guidance Counselor for District #1 for one year before joining the staff at Trinidad State Junior College. During her time at TSJC, Martha taught Psychology and served as a Vocational Guidance Specialist in the TSJC Career and Counseling office until her retirement in 1993. For over 23 years, Martha served as advisor for numerous student groups, especially showing as interest and dedication towards serving the needs of women students. Martha was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, the Tau Omicron Scholastics Honor Society, Alpha Psi Omega National Drama Honor Society and Kappa Gamma Society for Women Educators. Preceding her in death are her parents Kate Moon and Homer Powell and sister Sara Boyd Powell. Mother and Father-in-law Sallie George Gill and Edgar Haun. Brother-in-law Ed Haun, Sr., and nephew Ed Haun, Jr. Martha is survived by her husband Sam T. Haun, son Samuel Tyler Haun, Jr., and wife Mary of Trinidad; son George Gill Haun and wife Veronica of Colorado Springs. She is also survived by her grandson Adam Tyler Haun and granddaughters Rebeca and Samantha Haun; sisters Charlene Vesely and husband Jerry of Loveland, Colorado, Patricia Johnston and husband Lester of Trinidad, CO., brother Homer "Bud" Powell and wife Sue of Murfreesboro, TN.; sister-in-law Ethyleen Haun of Florida and numerous nieces, nephews, co-workers and friends. Martha loved her family, and lighted the path of education for many a student with a smile and an encouraging word. She led them on to new heights and for her dedication to her task and her helping hand along the way; we say our thanks and goodbye. Graveside service will be Thursday, November 15, 2012 at 1:00pm at Evergreen Cemetery.
