Obituary of Dudley Merritt

Dudley Merritt Mr. Merritt passed away on Monday, January 8, 2007. He was a native of Rutherford County, Tenn., but had lived in Chattanooga for the past 70 years. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Spitler Merritt and the son of the late Joshua and Polly Merritt. He retired from TVA as a supervisor of power transmission line design after 40 years' service. He was a graduate of the University of Chattanooga and was elected captain of the football team and was selected on an All-South team. He served in World War II in the Navy Seabees. Survivors include two brothers, Johnny Merritt, of Eagleville, Tenn., and Jimmy Merritt, of Franklin, Tenn.; one sister, Azilee Dewey, of Lavergne, Tenn.; and special friend, Thelma Gilreath, of Chattanooga. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's research or cancer research or your favorite charity. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Sam Payne officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery.
